It went on like this, page after page, week after week. Lonni Sue wrote obsessively, too, during her hypergraphic period, but it was all word lists, not this sort of endless recurring loop. Wearing’s constant sense that the world had just come into existence wasn’t limited to his own consciousness. At one point, Deborah arrived at the hospital to find her husband holding a piece of chocolate in his left palm. He covered it with his right hand, then uncovered it, as if, she writes, “he were a magician practicing a disappearing trick.”

“Look!” he said. “It’s new!” He couldn’t take his eyes off it.

“It’s the same chocolate,” I said gently.

“No…look! It’s changed. It wasn’t like that before…” He covered and uncovered the chocolate every couple of seconds, lifting and looking.

“Look! It’s different again! How do they do it?”
